Hee ^^ I actually like this take on things! Partly because it reflects my experience with living in packed or unstable housing situations, due to economic woes and mental illness. ^^;
I'm personally averse to using the term "polygamy," though, because it has a lot of historical baggage. Like, I was raised Mormon (which is why I sympathize with *Mute so much -_- ), and their historical take on polygamy was best described by this one church leader's quote that was like "I think no more of taking another wife than I do of taking another cow."
Laws against polygamy were designed to prevent this sort of awfulness, IIRC.
So I prefer to call it polyamory, or just poly for short. And I'm not sure about it being culturally encouraged so much as that, it became more acceptable as people started "householding" together (and vice-versa). Which, I think I like that term too.
I don't know much about AI reproduction, but the "fission" concept sounds like it would make a very interesting story.
Would you mind maybe changing the polygamy wording, and then reposting this to the community as a worldbuilding essay? :3
EDIT: About living alone being selfish ... I kind of had the same idea, and in Software Bride it sort of implies that all the Investigator's earnings are going to making payments on the White Princess. So if she actually does quit her job for a different one, or to rely solely on Basic Income, she and *Mute may have to make interesting lifestyle adjustments. ^^;
